Rustic Country Bookshelves

The client wanted bookshelves that appeared to be built-in without being attached to the walls or floor. They felt that gave them more options should they move them to another room. The result was creating 2 pieces of furniture.

Plywood isn't always the best choice so in this case we glued up panels per the client's request.

Creating a rustic country feel means doing things the old way which adds a lot of charm to the piece.

In this case we decided to begin assembly on the job site so we could more easily interact with the client on design tweaks along the way.

Treatments like edge profiles and finish are easier to refine.

Gluing up large solid wood panels allowed us to distress the boards to create a rustic feel.

We also were able to select grain patterns and other important design details.

The clearances along the walls and ceiling were 1/2" which requires very careful attention to detail so that the piece achieves the design objective of looking built-in while being a stand alone piece of furniture.

Rough assembly of the bookcases in their intended location allowed us to compensate for uneven floors and ceiling.

Next we turned our attention to details like drawer layout, incorporating a computer and printer and door orientations.

We also added fluted molding and some arts & crafts feel to the pieces.

Once we test fitted the bookcases we turned our attention to final trim details and finish techniques.

The result was a very country old-world well worn look with faded edges on the paint and other distressing details.

It's an iterative approach to design, semi-install, tweak and repeat the process to get to the desired look.

Some details like the beaded backboard not originally envisioned made all the difference.

You know when the design is right.

It all just comes together.

It's why we design pieces uniquely and don't compromise on design or process.

The results speak for themselves.
